I'm pretty sure it was your singing group's "fakebook" that became our ... family's defacto standard set of songs, or so the legend goes! Thanks for sharing -- and any other details or stories are more than welcome.morelessDelete
David and I often swapped photos of each other's boats taken while ... we were racing. My favorite picture of Psyché's Song is one he took. This is my favorite shot of Sea Note during the Charity Regatta, Sept 9th, 2007.morelessDelete
David, many of your friends had fun on and off the water ... today. And as usual, your presence was critically important to our enjoyment.morelessDelete
Matthew: It is a wonderful tribute to your father. I knew all ... of this from our talks and dealing with his schedule when we tried to get together; I had no schedule, but he did, almost all of it devoted to help others. I remember Dave not only as a friend, a buddy as he liked to call me, but also a person who though about issues. Even thought I have spend almost 50 years in academic pursuits, I rarely have had interesting conversations with my fellow academics outside specific academic specialties. With Dave, I had talks about BIG ISSUES that I had had in my freshman year at UCR and, later, at UCSB. This all was great fun because it was not TOO serious, but instead, part of a nice relationship in which conversation moved from banter and gossip through fixing a boat to conversations about life and the universe. It is rare for people to talk about such issues these days--perhaps in fear of offending someone--but Dave was never upset that I did not hold his religious beliefs, but rather, he wanted to talk more about "why." Your dad was an exceptional person. As is evident from all of the comments that have been posited, he was a person who inspired and helped people realize their aspirations. To me, he was someone to spend time with at many different levels. I used to kid him that his inner engineer came out in his sons, but what was always evident is this: he was interested in everything and everybody. And he was kind and generous. I cannot possibly imagine your loss, because it must be so great. But, he would constantly tell me how proud he was of his sons; and for good reason. I am sorry for your loss, but I am also sorry for my loss; I have lost a good friend, and these are not so easy to establish. jon turnermorelessDelete
I cryed when I read your words........Mr McEachen had a profound effect ... on my junior high and high school years. I was one of the lucky ones who not only had him for all 3 years I attended La Cumbre Junior High, but when I started Santa Barbara High School in 1979, Mr. McEachen transferred there and I also had him all three years there! I still use his memory training and speed reading techniques he taught us in junior high school...........I still impress friends at parties with my ability to recite the names of all of our presidents in order! I wish all children had the opportunity to experience school with such a fabulous teacher. His methods helped me to attend UCSB on a full scholarship, for that I will always be grateful! I actually think of Mr. McEachen quite often as I use his name as a password prompt for "name of your favorite teacher". My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family...........your father was a remarkable man. Sincerely, Elizabeth Lee AustinmorelessDelete
Thanks, Rich. I’m sorry I missed talking to you yesterday at the ... service—usually our conversations have been in Ashland. Your brother-sister reminiscences resonate. We miss Dave more than I can express. Phil WilcoxmorelessDelete
You'll be glad to hear that my 9th grade friends and I ... TP'd Mr. McEachen's house back in about 1979. (Of course we did it out of our love and respect for him.)morelessDelete
Great story! And so true to my own experience of going anywhere ... with him and Judith! The thing I especially loved about such moments was the visible, unalloyed pleasure he'd take in them.morelessDelete
Matthew; your population value is for the entire county of Santa Barbara. ... The city is about 92,000, and the south coast including Goleta, Isle Vista, Montecito, Summerland, and Carpinteria is about 220,000. So the odds of meeting one of Dave's former students is even greater than 1 in 86.morelessDelete
Can't remember names, either. I always thought I had plenty of time ... to get closer to him, which I wanted to do because I would be hoping more of him would rub off on me. I even tried drinking Flat Tires for awhile. I feel somewhat better now that I have permanently 'borrowed' one of the glasses the Club served them in, imagining that he grasped the same glass once or twice or more....morelessDelete
